πŸŽ™οΈβ†’πŸ’°Your podcast is a sales engine. You just don't know it.

Hi, Reader.

Downloads don't refer new business to youβ€”people do. So instead of chasing marketing metrics, focus on building up relationships.

The sales will follow.

Your Podcast is a Sales Engine. You Just Don't Know It.

Most business owners and marketing leaders I talk to want to start a podcast because it will help bring visibility and attention to their brand.

This is true. In fact, our 2026 State of Podcasting in Professional Services report found that increased online visibility was indeed the #1 benefit of hosting a business podcast.

But there was so much more than that...

More than 60% of business podcast hosts said their show helps to develop new sales opportunities. More than 50% said their show leads to new collaboration opportunities. And nearly 45% said their show leads to conversations with referral sources.

How Does a Podcast Build Sales Pipeline?

A podcast is a conversation magnet. And conversations with the right people lead to sales opportunities.

Each show that we produce has generated either won deals or qualified sales opportunities for our clients within the first 6-12 months of launch.

But only a small portion of these opportunities were from listeners who reached out directly. Instead, most of the sales impact came from podcast guests who either:

  1. Became a client, or
  2. Referred an opportunity

The Podcast Value Triangle: A Framework For Podcast Growth

There is a 'value triangle' created when the right guest shows up on the right podcast. The guest shows up for the audience, who is interested in the guest's area of expertise. The host wants to develop a relationship with the guest, but is also responsible to make sure the guest delivers value to the audience. And the audience shows up because they trust the host to deliver that value.

All aspects of this equation are built up over time through consistency. As a host, you have two major objectives:

  1. Give your guests a top-notch experience. Communicate key dates, make the recording seamless and engaging, give guests all the links and video files, make it easy to share and promote.
  2. Keep the relationship going. Re-promote older episodes with key guests, follow up with guests to share episode performance and explore future collaborations.

If you position your podcast to attract ideal guests and maintain a consistent publication schedule, focusing on these two things will open doors to new business development opportunities.

Hi, Reader. Recently, one of my clients published their 100th episode, which is a pretty big deal in the podcasting world. If you're ready to see what the journey to 100 episodes looks like, stick with me πŸ‘‡ Less than 6% of podcasts reach 100 episodes Thankfully, PodMatch and Buzzsprout update this particular statistic each month. As of August 2026, only 5.8% of podcasters have reached 100 episodes. Let's do the math. How much calendar time does it take to reach 100 episodes? Well, that...

Hi, Reader. Will history repeat itself like how MTV killed rock n' roll? Sure, Netflix and YouTube are now considered 'podcasting' platforms...but let's be real; the act of listening to a podcast extends far beyond a screen. And since this newsletter edition beats up on video to some degree, I've paired this topic with an interview with a host from an audio-only podcast in the accounting space. Let's dig in πŸ‘‡ Business podcasts are the 2nd most active genre First, there is a common...

Hi, Reader. First of all, I'd like to apologize for not sending a newsletter edition in the last month. Red Cedar Marketing is growing and I've been onboarding two new clients in July with two more coming in August. If you know any fantastic video podcast editors, please send them my way! What do we mean by 'thought leadership'? There's some people in professional service industries who believe 'thought leadership' is simply regurgitating existing information from influencers and AI tools....
